Alethea

Alethea's objective is to create a web application to aggregate data on fake news from fact checking Twitter accounts. The goal of the app is to automate the collection of information in one place helping people to be informed in a fast and reliable way.

Introduction

This project was developed during the last American elections. We* chose three Twitter accounts whose objective was to check the reliability of news being spread during the campaign. The goal of the app was to automate the collection of information in one place helping people to have access to reliable information. Apart from that, we also analyzed the contents of the tweets to get some insights.

Twitter accounts

We chose the following Twitter accounts belonging to fact check websites: Factcheckdotorg, Politifact and Snopes.

The user interface

In order to gather and process the tweets we programmed in Python and used the Twitter API. For the user interface we used HTML, CSS and the Flask library. It renders an html file with the information incorporated with Jinja2 commands.

Visualizations

The plot bellow was drawn by an algorithm that collects 9,000 tweets published by the three accounts aforementioned. The tweets are separated in groups that mention or Trump or Biden. Afterwards, fake news related words are counted within these two groups. Fake news related words are: “false”,”fake”,”misleading”, “wrong”, “fraud”, “inaccurate”,”incorrect”, “lie”,”fabricated”,”fictitious”, “deceit”, “erroneous”,”distorted”,”unfounded”,”mistaken”,”untrue”:

The plots bellow show the sentiment analysis of 2000 tweets of each of the accounts:

Note that all these visualizations were plotted with the tweets published during the electoral campaign in 2020.
